How Much Does It Cost to Scan Slides in Kodak Carousels?

Count the slides, not just the trays. Compare worked prices, resolution choices and handling questions for your family's carousel collection.

At Family Media Transfer, standard 35mm slides are priced per slide, including slides stored in projector carousels. The base rate is $0.99 per slide at 1800 dpi or $1.99 at 3600 dpi, before eligible volume savings. Count the slides actually in the tray rather than assuming every slot is full.

A full 80-slide tray at the $0.99 rate has a base scanning total of $79.20. A full 140-slide tray totals $138.60. Empty slots are not photographs to scan, and the tray's capacity is not necessarily your order quantity.

What do one or several carousels cost to scan?

Examples for standard 35mm slides at 1800 dpi
Collection Actual slides Before discount Estimated scanning total
One full 80-slot tray 80 $79.20 $79.20
One full 140-slot tray 140 $138.60 $138.60
Four full 80-slot trays 320 $316.80 $284.80 with 10% off
Six full 140-slot trays 840 $831.60 $688.80 with 17% off

These examples exclude shipping, tax, physical drives and additional work. Discounts are rounded on each item, so multiplying the original subtotal by a percentage can give a slightly different result. Check current options in your estimate, especially for glass mounts, unusual film sizes or condition concerns.

How many slides fit in a Kodak carousel?

Kodak's projector manual describes both 80-slide and 140-slide trays. That capacity tells you how many mounts the tray can hold; it does not tell you how many images your family loaded. Check for empty slots and keep a note of the actual or approximate count for each tray. The Kodak Carousel operating manual illustrates the two tray types.

A tray marked “Vacation” may include only a few photographs, while another may be full. If you have ten trays, do not automatically enter 1,400 slides. A rough count accompanied by a clear note is a better starting point than an assumed maximum.

Should I empty the carousels before sending them?

Keep a meaningful sequence together. If the tray represents a trip, family gathering or narrated slide show, photograph the tray label and note where the sequence begins. Ask about intake and packing before unloading the collection just to make it fit a smaller box.

FMT works with slides stored in carousels as well as loose slides. Describe how yours are stored so the team can confirm handling. Do not force a jammed slide out of a projector or pull apart a damaged mount. Send a photo of the problem first.

Which scanning resolution should I choose?

FMT offers 1800 and 3600 dpi for standard 35mm slides. Tell us whether you mainly want to view the images on screens, share them with family or make enlargements. A higher-resolution scan captures more pixels, but it cannot restore detail that was never in the original photograph.

If only a handful of slides are candidates for large prints, identify those when planning your project. Discuss image correction separately from choosing the scanning resolution, particularly if the slides have fading or damage.

How do carousel and per-slide services compare?

Compare the total for the number of images you actually have. A flat tray price and a per-slide price use different units. Check resolution, delivery, minimum charges, return shipping and whether keeping the sequence is included. Those details are more useful than comparing two starting prices alone.

Mixed collections can also affect the estimate. FMT's eligible photos, slides, tapes, film and audio share the same volume-discount thresholds. Optional drives and other add-ons are separate from eligible scanning services.

What if my slides are not standard 35mm?

A familiar square mount does not guarantee the same film size inside it. Mention unusually large images, glass or metal mounts, and anything you cannot identify. Standard 35mm pricing should not be assumed for every transparency.

See our photo, slide and negative scanning options for current details. If you are in Minnesota, check the drop-off information; mail-in options are available through the estimate.
