FAQ - Videotapes
What is the resolution of videotape transfers?
All standard videotapes are transferred at a resolution of 720 x 480 (SD). However, HDV tapes are transferred in 1920 x 1080 (HD).
How many tapes can fit on a USB flash drive?
The average file size for videotape transfers in MP4 format is approximately 2 GB per hour of video. The total number of tapes that will fit on a USB drive depends on the combined runtime of your tapes.
Can you create DVDs from my videotapes?
Our primary service converts videotapes to MP4 digital files, which can be delivered via USB drive or digital download. We only provide DVDs upon special request, as digital files offer significantly more flexibility and compatibility with modern devices
Do I pay the same price for tapes with only a few minutes of footage?
Yes. Our transfer process involves capturing the full contents of each tape, reviewing the footage, and trimming out blank or static sections. Since this requires the same time and effort regardless of tape length, we charge a flat rate per tape. However, if a tape is completely blank or contains only commercially recorded content, we charge a minimum fee of $10 instead of the full transfer price
Does the conversion to digital include color correction?
No, our standard conversion does not include color correction. While color issues are rare with videotapes, they typically vary scene by scene, making automatic adjustments impractical. However, we ensure a high-quality transfer by stabilizing footage and removing blank or static sections.
How will my video transfers be organized?
Each digital file will be custom-titled based on any labels or descriptions on the original tape. If no information is available, we will assign a numbered file name that corresponds to the original tape. Each tape is transferred as a single digital video file.
Can you edit my video transfers to remove unwanted sections?
Yes, we can provide custom video editing upon request with specific instructions from you. Otherwise, the MP4 files we provide can easily be edited using standard video editing software at any time.
FAQ - 8mm Film
Do you convert sound on film?
While we convert 8mm and super 8 film of various sizes, unfortunately, it is not part of our process to digitize sound on film.
In our experience, 99% of film was recorded as silent. In rare instances, 8mm and Super 8 film may contain magnetic audio lines and 16mm film may contain magnetic, but more commonly optical, sound lines. Of this small percentage of film reels that do have a sound line, an even a smaller percentage of these used the proper recording equipment required to capture both the sound and picture.
Because these instances are so rare, and to ensure we’re providing the highest quality transfers, it is not part of our process to digitize the sound on film, when present. If you’d like any more information about this, contact our customer service team!
Will I get my original film back?
Yes! You will receive all of your original film back, and our transfer process does not damage your film in any way.
How do I know if my 8mm movie film is still good?
If stored under reasonable conditions, 8mm and Super 8 film is typically still suitable for transfer. To check, look at the reel—if the film lies flat and is not stuck together, it is likely in good shape, even if the leader is brittle or broken. However, film imperfections such as out-of-focus scenes, debris, or exposure issues cannot be corrected in the transfer process.
What if my film appears curled or damaged?
It depends on the severity of the damage. If the film is heavily curled or deteriorated, we may not be able to transfer it.
Does the conversion to digital include color correction?
No, our standard conversion does not include color correction. While color issues are rare with videotapes, they typically vary scene by scene, making automatic adjustments impractical. However, we ensure a high-quality transfer by stabilizing footage and removing blank or static sections.
Do you archive my film transfer?
Yes! We archive your transferred film for 2 months as a backup. This allows you to request additional copies later or recover your files in the rare event of a lost return shipment.
