How Much Does It Cost to Digitize VHS Tapes? (2026 Pricing Guide)

At Family Media Transfer, a standard VHS transfer costs $29.99 for up to two recorded hours. Each additional two recorded hours counts as another transfer; we check the running time and confirm additional charges with you first. Your total also depends on the collection size, volume savings and delivery options. Estimate the cost of your tapes before placing an order.
VHS pricing and volume discounts
Eligible digitizing services share one volume discount. Tapes, photos, slides, film and audio can count toward the same threshold. The highest eligible discount applies automatically.

The mail kit, physical copies and other add-ons do not count toward these thresholds. Volume discounts do not stack with other offers.
What a box of tapes costs
Ten standard VHS tapes total $299.90 before any selected extras. Eleven tapes total $329.89 before the volume discount and $297.00 after it. Twenty-six tapes qualify for 17% off and total $647.40 after the discount. These examples exclude shipping, taxes and optional extras. Shopify rounds the discount on each item to the cent.
Does a four- or six-hour VHS tape cost more?
It can. FMT's standard VHS transfer covers up to two recorded hours, with additional two-hour blocks counted as additional transfers. The tape's printed capacity is not necessarily its recorded runtime. If you do not know how long your family recording is, keep the tape with its labels and let us check; we confirm additional charges first.
When do I pay?
You pay when you place your order. Rough counts are fine for your estimate. We recount your media when it arrives and may adjust your invoice if the actual count differs. If a tape needs repair or your project needs additional work, we explain the options and get your approval before doing that work.
Getting your tapes to us
You can bring your collection to a Twin Cities drop-off counter; check the current locations, hours and appointment information before visiting. If you prefer to mail it, review the mail-in kit and shipping options in your project estimate. Digitizing is priced separately from the kit.
Digital files and optional physical copies
Your video is transferred to digital files for compatible phones, computers and TVs. A USB drive or disc copy may be useful for your family, depending on the devices you use. Choose your delivery options in the builder and review their prices before checkout.
Keep another copy of your digital files in a separate place. A USB drive is useful storage, but no single device should be your only backup.
Is doing it yourself cheaper?
If you already have a working VCR, a compatible capture device and a computer, doing your own transfer may reduce the service cost. Allow time to set up, check the picture and sound, record each tape, and organize the files.
Videotape capture generally runs in real time. Ten tapes containing two hours each take about twenty hours to play through, before setup and checking. Equipment prices and compatibility vary, so check what you need before buying.
Comparing transfer services
Compare the complete estimate, not just the advertised price per tape. Ask what is included, whether tape length changes the charge, how damaged media is handled, which file formats you receive, and how your originals are returned. Also check shipping, physical copies and turnaround before deciding.
