How do reel size and film footage affect the price?
The options above are the current base prices for 8mm and Super 8 reels. Measure the reel across its diameter, from one outer edge to the other. A full 3-inch reel holds approximately 50 feet; 4-inch, 100 feet; 5-inch, 200 feet; 6-inch, 300 feet; and 7-inch, 400 feet. A partly filled reel can contain less film, so tell us when your count or reel size is an estimate.
Reel diameter does not identify the film format. Contact us about 16mm, sound film or reels larger than 7 inches before applying the prices above. Ask for help identifying and pricing your reels.
Is this service for film reels or 8mm camcorder tapes?
This page is for photographic home-movie film on open reels. If your recordings are inside Video8, Hi8 or Digital8 cassettes, use our 8mm videotape transfer service instead. You can combine film, tapes and photographs in the same project estimate.
Do I need a working projector, and what files do I receive?
You do not need to supply a projector. We clean and scan 8mm and Super 8 film frame by frame and provide an MP4 video file for each reel by digital download. Your original film is returned. A physical USB drive is optional; keep soundtrack labels with any sound film so we can discuss it before transfer.
How should I prepare old film reels?
Keep reels in their existing cases and preserve handwritten dates, titles and family groupings. Do not force brittle film through a projector to find out what is on it. Tell our team about broken splices, loose film or an unusual smell before sending the collection.
Where is the film transferred, and how long does it take?
Our family-owned team digitizes your film in Minneapolis. Standard turnaround is three to four weeks after media check-in. Read about our local film transfer process, then use the estimate builder to choose reel sizes and delivery options.
